The evening end of the ladder
Caffeine-free mushroom cacao, for winding down at night
By Brewlune · Updated September 1, 2026
Mushroom cacao is roasted cacao blended with functional mushroom extracts, made for the end of the day rather than the start of it: no coffee, no added caffeine, and the mushrooms chosen for winding down rather than winding up. It is closer to drinking chocolate than to tea, and it is the honest answer to “what can I drink at night instead of coffee.”
Brewlune's version is Last Light: roasted cacao with no caffeine added — cacao itself carries a natural 2–10mg trace, which we print rather than round to zero — plus 600mg of reishi and 300mg of chaga as fruiting-body extracts, and 200mg of elemental magnesium as glycinate. Every one of those numbers is on the front of the bag.
What is mushroom cacao, exactly?
Roasted cacao powder — the unsweetened kind, not cocoa mix — blended with concentrated mushroom extracts, prepared like drinking chocolate. The mushrooms in an evening blend are usually reishi, and often chaga: the species associated in the early literature with calm rather than alertness. Because cacao is whisked whole into the cup, the extracts ride along rather than staying in a filter, which is why the milligrams printed on the bag are the milligrams in the mug.
Is it actually caffeine-free?
Nearly, and we would rather print the “nearly” than round it away. Cacao naturally carries a small amount of caffeine — about 2–10mg per serving depending on the bean and the roast — so no cacao drink is truly zero. Last Light adds none, and the placard says so: “Caffeine: 0mg added — trace from cacao.” For scale, a standard drip coffee is around 95mg, Dawn Patrol is 48mg, Glassy (matcha) is 40mg; Last Light is roughly a hundredth of a coffee, not a fraction of one.
What does 200mg of magnesium as glycinate mean?
The number on the bag is elemental magnesium — the mineral itself — not the weight of the compound it arrives in. Magnesium glycinate is magnesium bound to the amino acid glycine; 200mg elemental is the figure that matters and the figure we print. It is a mineral, not a mushroom extract, and it sits on the same placard as the reishi and chaga so the whole serving reads at a glance.
Last Light vs the others: the honest comparison
Four Sigmatic's Calm Cacao (per its own page, checked September 1, 2026) is the closest neighbor: organic cacao with reishi, stated as log-grown fruiting-body extract — credit where due, that is the right part of the mushroom — at about 10mg caffeine per serving. What its page does not state is how much reishi is in a serving. Golde's Cacao Turmeric (same date) is a caffeine-free evening drink at 2mg, built on turmeric, cacao, and spices, with no mushrooms in it — a different product answering the same bedtime question. Last Light prints all three numbers people actually ask about: reishi 600mg, chaga 300mg, magnesium 200mg elemental.
And for the rest of the day?
Last Light is the evening end of a printed caffeine ladder. Point Break is the full cup at 95mg; Dawn Patrol is the half cup at 48mg; Glassy is the coffee-free daytime option, a mushroom matcha at 40mg; Last Light closes the day with none added. Same fruiting-body standard, same placard, four different times of day.
